steve chenevey. glad to have you along with us this morning. the remnants of hurricane earl hit parts of canada over the weekend. more than 250 customers were without power saturday night in nova scotia when the peak of the storm hit. it is being blamed for one death outside of halifax. the canadian hurricane center says earl made landfall around 10: 30 saturday morning. at that point, it was a category one hurricane. >> seems like that is all we were talking about last week. all in all, turned out it be a beautiful weekend for us. >> not only here in washington but generally the beaches all the way from the carolinas up to southern new england. what a nice day yesterday. going to be more of the same today. going to be a little bit warmer but that will be the worst of the forecast. we'll have temperatures in the 80s after a nice, cool start. we'll take a look at current conditions. here in washington, we are 63- degree. it is downright cool in many spots with temperatures in the upper 40s in a few locations and low 50s. again, great start to the day. humidity, 60%. we have these

out there on the roadways. julie wright, what is the latest? >> i think you just jinxed us. >> i probably did. >> in problems reported on the beltway at the wilson bridge. that is in good shape. headed into the northeast washington, bw parkway and 50 also quiet this morning. but on 95, we are wrapping up this accident that occurred on the southbound side of the occoquan. that is in the propose she was being cleared. now, the pace is restored as you continue on the southbound side but northbound, that is where we have the heavy volume. before delays from dale see headed up towards the occoquan. we had slow traffic in the express lanes leaving the prince william parkway. westbound i-70 at 94 and woodbine we have reports of the tractor-trailer possibly overturned. i-70 at 94 shut down until further notice because of this crash. southbound 270 busy on the top side. we have delays approaching and passing 109. no incidents to report leaving germantown to the split. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. >>> new this morning, we're taking a look at live pictures right now from a

early, pick up your street. start using your numbered streets as alternative routes to avoid 16th street. it will be shut down for some time. the numbered streets will be peppered and flooded with people using those as the alternate routes. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. >>> breaking news that we're following out of northwest washington this morning. several people have been injured as a result of that fire at an apartment in the # 100 block of 16th street. >> sarah simmons has been there. she joins us once again live from the scene with the latest. >> steve and gurvir, the fire is out at this point p effect else has been taken safely outside of this apartment building. as you mentioned, there were several injuries here. eight people that were taken to the hospital. five of them ended up going to the burn center and one child was taken to children's hospital. two people we understand at this point are in critical condition including that child. this all started at about 4:00 this morning. firefighters were called to this building on 16th street northwest near lamont

with us here foe fox 5 morning news. it is a little wet out there. >> it sure is. we have some rain coming down pretty heavy in some areas. let's check in with tony perkins. >> we've got rainfall. some of the rain is heavy here and there. we are going to likely see rain continue during the course of the morning hours. we have a flash flood watch in effect until 8:00 this morning for most of the area because of that rain. lets astart with hd radar. we'll show hua is happening as we speak. now, not the entire area is seeing heavy rain. it is a band of rain moving from the south to the north. that is now coming through man as just to the west of reston, virginia, up into leesburg, near gaithersburg and this is pushing to the north-northeast. we'll keep our eyes on this through the course of the morning. one little anwr owe band of heavy rain but there are more rain showers off to the east in prince george's county, anne arundel county, places like that in the chesapeake bay. more run will be arriving in the course of the morning hours. let's go to the graphics. here is your big picture

continues to press on. out to the north and west, can you see a cold front. that will bring us a great looking weekend. there is a closer look at earl. it is losing some of its distinctive features. that eye wall is starting to collapse. it will maintain its intensity as it pushes off to the north and east. remember yesterday, it is is a major hurricane with winds approach aring 170 miles per hour. so not quite the beast it was yesterday. 78degrees at reagan national. humidity, 66%. wind are out of the east at seven miles per hour. our forecast is not a bad one. clouds will start the day. we'll have more sunshine later. there could be a few bands of rain that sneak as far north and west as the washington area. i think some of our viewers just south and east see a little rain. generally partly cloudy skies with highs about 90. >> okay. looking forward if a nice long weekend. >> you got it. >> let's check in with julie wright with the late off the traffic for us. >> good morning to you all. right on the roads, here we go southbound i-95 in a jam at this point because of an accident down

. august isn't what it used to be in terms of a back to school month for retailers. it is spread out now. a lot of schools start earlier in the south so retails from the end of june, begunking of july through september is back to school. it is spread out a little bit. it is still a huge month. we get best buy earnings today as well. so it is important to see if people are spending on high end items like big korean tvs as well. >> as you mentioned a minute ago, the recession, there has been a lot of concern abouts a double dip recession but the oracle of omaha has spoken and apparently some people say we should be listening to what he has to say. >> when warren buffett speaks, people do tend to listen. he has medicine a little bit of money in the marketplace and knows which way the wind is blowing. he didn't see a double dip recession. he spoke at an economic conference yesterday and said look, we've hired more people in the last couple of months. our businesses, and he owns a lot of businesses an he has a lot of money in a lot of different companies, says things are looking good here

department of health and human services building. sherry ly joins us with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. we are actually right here near the capitol, the ray bun building as well which houses some of the house members and then over there is the hght and human services building that you mentioned. town there on c street is where the shooting happened. here what is we know right now. the shooting apparently involving u.s. capitol police just before 5:00 this morning. there are reports that the suspect was shot in the and. he was down but conscious. this was a 200 block of c street in southwest. again, happening just before 5:00 this morning. there were a number of evidence markers on the scene. typically, those would be evidence of shell casing suggesting perhaps that multiple shots were fired again based on the information or what we've seen out here. it appears there may have been several shots fired. we are still waiting somebody from capitol police to come out here and provide us with more information about what has happened. just to also show you over here, there is a wooded

september. thank you for being with us this morning on fox 5 morning news. i'm steve chenevey. >> i'm gurvir dhindsa. >> we want to take a live look at ocean city. what a beautiful start to the day there but they are getting ready as hurricane earl approaches. the governor has declared a state of emergency. he says it is unlikely ocean city will need to be evacuated. sherry ly is live in ocean city and we'll talk to her in just a few minutes. over in virginia, the governor has also declared a state of emergency. residents and visit iters have been ordered to leave hatteras on the outer banks. >> certainly a formidable hurricane. maximum winds have increased 145 miles per hour, gusted to about 170. it continues to intensify and deepen. i don't think it will get much stronger than this but this is a very powerful storm. thank goodness, it won't directly make landfall. we'll talk first about current conditioned. i mentioned to you it is trekking off to the north and northwest at about 17 miles per hour. now, centered 410 miles south of cape hatteras, north carolina. it looks like it will
